Social Software for Learning and Research
Working together using this wiki
Think of this wiki as a shared online whiteboard. Our entire group can share information using this wiki, making our work accessible to the entire group - and beyond. We'll use this page as a starting point to just generate a list of technologies that we have used that support collaboration
The Famous Sites
-
Wikipedia
- Flickr
- Youtube: Nursing Education Clip This example is fascinating for me because of the comments below the video a discussion about whether or not the instructor is teaching proper techniques. This kind of reflection and argument is worthwhile and would be strengthened by the participation of a professor or other expert in the field of health care who could help add clarity to the issue:
- Blogger
- Delicious
- Second Life
-
Add more to this list, and/or post them in delicious with the tag wasc2007
Tags:
A Tag is a 'keyword' or one word description that summarizes the content of a web page, picture, or other creation. On may participatory media sites, you can search tags to find interesting
Other Wiki tools that we have used:
- PBWiki: the site we are using now
- PMWiki: More flexibility in look and feel but harder to install
- MediaWiki: The most familiar interface - wikipedia uses this technology - and the hardest to install and maintain
- Swiki: Easiest technology to setup and maintain, interface is dated from mid 90's
Some Other Resources:
Please contribute to this list, this is meant to be a list that we as a community can build:
- Stanford's Center for Teaching and Learning Page on Using Wiki's in Class includes some reviews of technologies listing pro's and con's
- Wikipedia's Comparison of Wiki Software: A more technical oriented list that gives details about a wide variety of wiki technologies
Resources from SRI International on Social Software:
SRI International's Center for Technology in Learning conducted a summer colloquium on Blogs, Podcasts, and Wikis. Below is the list of resources that community that participated in this colloquium generated.
In the Blogs, Wikis, and Podcasts Colloquium (Summer 2006) held through SRI, we explored these technologies and how they might be useful (or not) in classes or as learning tools for instructors and students. Moderators included Linda Polin, Davidson Professor of Education and Technology at Pepperdine University's Graduate School of Education and Psychology; Dan Gilbert, academic technology specialist at Stanford University; and Deb Emery, who works at the John Gardner Center for Youth at Stanford University and teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses at Stanford.
The resources listed below were chosen because they provide an introduction to some aspects of the different technologies. They are not definitive papers, but rather offer ideas and instructions for using these technologies.

“RSS Feed Information” RSS Feeds are good to understand, but they can be confusing. Why RSS Feeds: to get the information to people who might want to find it that don't already know about it. If you're working in a class there are still uses for the technology, but probably not as urgent as if you are wanting to publish your work to the "world."
